Beliefs vs. Expectations

Hi, Highly Sensitive Person!

What kind of expectations do you have in your life?

I'm talking expectations you have about how your life "should be" or what you think "should" be different.

They could also be expectations from others (whether they've directly expressed them to you or you've created your own understanding and interpretation).

Have you thought about these "rules" as an observer of your own life?

We Highly Sensitive People (HSPs) are really good at picking up, and setting our own, very high standards.

And those standards often mean that we create complicated, pass/fail scenarios for ourselves just as much (or more often) as we create conditions for excellence and success.

It comes from a desire to create amazing things, big and small.

And it can often create internal pressure and overwhelm when we take on things without examining whether they really work for us or not - especially as an HSP!

I spent a couple hours processing this for myself last week while in the car (where I often do some of my best thinking).

As I was driving down tree-lined avenues in gorgeous sunshine, I noticed that I was feel sad, disappointed, and even guilty.

Looking at the thoughts those feelings came from, I noticed that I was stirring up beliefs, desires, and expectations into a pretty potent cocktail that was creating disappointment and anxiety rather than inspiration and motivation.

I realized that I was so invested in my desires (my goals, visions, and dreams) that I was creating expectations of how and when I should accomplish them.

Yet, I was lacking belief (in myself, in the process, in the Universe, even) that led me to taking a lot of action that just drained me.

I wasn't making progress because I wasn't "behind" my own highly sensitive method of moving forward.

Beliefs and actions are a cycle that work together.

If you're taking too much action without belief, or working too much on your beliefs without action, you create unmet expectations that stall you in your tracks.

I was taking action for the sake of it rather than thinking through and taking action from a place of BEING who I want to be.

When I made that shift into being who I want to be, that's when everything changed and my beliefs and actions starting working together.

Now, I'm making serious traction again.

If that resonates with you, then this week's episode of The Highly Sensitive Club is for you.

Listen on your favorite podcast app and / or watch on Youtube.

In the episode, I share the:

  • Difference between expectations, beliefs, and desires

  • Three worldviews that help or hinder your progress towards what you want

  • Signs of being in "Victim," "Worker," or "Creator" mode

  • How to reset your brain so your beliefs and actions are working in concert, not against each other

Comment below and let me know if this resonates for you too.

Are you taking a lot of action without aligning your beliefs?

Are you caught in the self-development trap of "working on yourself" without taking any action?

Which one needs some attention?

Big, warm vibes -

Steph
