Escaping Corporate into Entrepreneurship for Highly Sensitive People with Pierre Bradette, CPC

Hey there, Highly Sensitive Person-

You're creative, you've got a great work ethic, and you can survive in lots of different situations - 100%.

BUT!

When the situations you often find yourself in start to feel like energy vampires, maybe it's not you, it's them.

As a Highly Sensitive Person (HSP), the place you spend a large portion of your time can have a powerful effect on your emotional state, moods, and overall wellbeing.

If that's home, you're in luck - you get to control your own environment and surround yourself with all the beautiful artwork, framily (friends and family) photos, and comfy blankets you want.

If you spend (or have spent) a lot of your time in traditional employment, you know some work environments... aren't as friendly to your high sensitivity as you'd like.

(That's why many of us HSPs choose self-employment or non-traditional work, so we have more time and environment flexibility).

Often, we sweet, sensitive souls will try to excel in the system, follow all the rules, and make it work anyway.

If it doesn't?

We're quick to shame ourselves, blame the system, and / or mentally check-out in a passive attempt to rebel (without actually doing anything "wrong") when we're butting up against friction.

It's a vicious cycle that tends to lead to emotional overwhelm, burn out, and stress.

You may even attempt to rally yourself, see the bright side, look for the things you can control.

And that works for a while... until it doesn't.

I'm going to propose something possibly radical to you.

What if it really isn't you? What if the system really is the problem?

What if the system works just fine for some people, but it's not designed for your highly sensitive brain, so it's not the right environment for you?

What if there's actually nothing wrong with your attention to subtleties and nuance, your deep empathy, and your attunement to the space and people around you, it's simply not in a system that values those qualities?

What could open up for you then?

In episode 76 of Highly Sensitive Club, I brought my business bestie and fellow coach, Pierre Bradette, CPC, on to talk about this very thing.

What happens when you're a successful HSP in the corporate world and start to get curious about time, energy, and financial freedom outside the box?

Listen on your favorite podcast app and / or watch on YouTube.

In the episode, you'll learn the:

  • surprisingly common trait many HSPs have in childhood (and nurture into adulthood)

  • hidden costs of bending your high sensitivity in order to survive in fast-paced, competitive environments

  • "runway" approach Pierre took to build emotional stability and mental readiness while planning his departure from corporate

  • holistic life expansion you can create when you dream up a vision - and follow the path one step at a time

Pierre and I get into some juicy topics during our conversation, including his "before and after" transformation becoming an entrepreneur,

AND!

...the unexpected freedom to explore spirituality and sexuality when you leave stifling environments.

I worked for a library, a bookstore, a museum, a non-profit, a boutique, and an organizing store before I made the leap into entrepreneurship 8 years ago.

(Listing it like that, I'm suddenly noticing a pattern in my preferred employment - ha!)

I was a part-timer, intern, and / or gig-worker before I became fully self-employed.

In other words, I have zero experience with the corporate world.

That's why I wanted to bring Pierre on to talk about his experience as an HSP (and a gay man) in the corporate world - and how to break out of systems that no longer serve you.

He rose to the challenge and became very successful in that world - as many HSPs do!

But when the call to independence and authenticity grew loud enough, he knew there was something else for him beyond the corporate box.

There might be for you too, whatever that "box" looks like for you.

Whether it's corporate employment, a rigid family system, or some other "box" you find yourself in, there's a different way to do things, a way that honors your high sensitivity

AND your needs.

You get to have an environment, routines, and support for your highly-sensitive brain and nervous system.

You're allowed to build habits and patterns that create win-wins, not one-sided dynamics.

You can change the way you operate without losing the core of your resourcefulness, critical thinking, and achievement-oriented approach.

It's possible to get a lot done and be authentic, open, and kind to yourself and others.
