Hi there, Highly Sensitive Person -
Imagine you have a magic key in your hand.
It's brass, small, with a slightly ornate bow (the part you hold, fun fact) with intricate whirls and scrollwork.
You can walk up to any door, turn the key, and step into your own mind.
Go to your nearest door, turn the key, and you'll step into a hallway lined with doors in either direction (both sides and either way you turn).
You go up to the nearest door and use your key to open it.
Inside, you find a pedestal with a radio.
The radio frequency is playing all of the beliefs and rules that you've heard from other people throughout your life.
"Money doesn't grow on trees."
"Sit up straight and mind your manners."
"You have to work hard to earn your way."
And interspersed in this ongoing recitation of things you've heard is a steady repetition:
That's just the way it is.
(I've always hated this phrase)
You reach out and turn the dial.
You hear inspiration quotes and motivational speeches.
"No one can make you feel inferior without your consent."
"I have a dream..."
"People will forget what you said. People will forget what you did. But people will never forget how you made them feel."
The next turn of the dial brings up encouragement and affection.
"You're doing a great job, honey."
"Keep going. You've got this."
"I love you so much."
You can keep turning the dial to infinite stations.
But the point is, that you can always turn the dial.
We often think that because something has always been a certain way that that's how it's always going to be.
This is simply your brain trying to keep you safe by using the past to try to predict the future.
You CREATE your future.
As a Highly Sensitive Person (HSP), you might have some thoughts like,
"I'm sensitive, so I'm easily overwhelmed and overstimulated."
"My high sensitivity means I carry other people's feelings around."
"I just can't make decisions. I'm thinking about too many factors."
Turn the dial.
High Sensitivity doesn't automatically mean that you feel overwhelmed, tired, and uncertain.
In fact, it can be the exact opposite.
You can be a Highly Sensitive Person who's frequently energized, confident, focused, and decisive.
What if your radio station sounded like this?
"My sensitivity is neutral. I can make whatever I want with it."
"Being highly sensitive means I connect on a deep level with others."
"I don't have to carry someone else's emotions to show I care."
"The way I process is okay."
"The way I process is an asset to me and to the people around me."
