How to Break Bad Habits and Interrupt Old Patterns

Hi there, Highly Sensitive Person-

I've been having a TON of breakthroughs lately, but this one really hit home.

When I've told people about it, I get some version of "Oooooh... yep! I know that feeling," or "Mhmm. I see myself in this picture, and I don't like it." (which always cracks me up)

So I knew I had to share this one with you too.

You know those moments when you're about to do something you know you're going to regret, and yet, you go ahead and do it anyway?

Yeah, I had one of those moments last week.

During the fall, Graeter's Ice Cream makes both pumpkin spice and cinnamon ice cream.

I LOVE cinnamon ice cream.

It's sweet and subtle and seasonal, so it's only around for a small portion of the year.

I decided it would be a good idea to stop to get some in between other errands.

knew I wasn't hungry.

I was fully aware that I was going to eat dinner a couple hours later.

I've talked many times about how sugar triggers depression and anxiety for me.

Not to mention, my body just doesn't love ice cream.

Even though I had MANY good reasons not to indulge my craving, I did it anyway.

My overriding mood at the time was "Don't care. Doing it anyway."

Reflecting back on this later, I decided to get curious.

What was really going on that a part of me was trying to pump the brakes while another part of me was putting my foot ALL the way down on the gas peddle?

When I replayed the moment and slo-mo'd my thoughts, I realized the compelling thought that had me happily pulling into the drive through lane and getting all the sundae toppings was, "I'll do it this time and fix it next time."

THAT thought.

I realized I've had that thought many, many times before, usually anytime I'm trying to break a bad habit or about to do something I know isn't in my best interest long-term.

So I came up with a new, very compelling thought that has me busting through my typical obstacles and getting myself in gear.

"I break the cycle now, not later."

If you want to see any kind of change in your life, it must be in this moment.

SO obvious, and yet, I had to come up with something powerful to use when temptation hits (as it does several times each day).

Listen to this week's episode of the Highly Sensitive Club to hear more about how this tiny but mighty belief can help you improve any area of your life.

Listen on your favorite podcast app and / or watch on YouTube.

In the episode, you'll find out:

  • How to become aware in the moment when you're having that internal negotiation over indulging an old habit or building something new

  • What to do when an old thought no longer motivates you like it used to

  • A hidden truth behind lasting habit change

  • The counterintuitive belief that sets you up for future success - in any area of your life

Since coming up with this new belief a week ago, I've been able to:

  • Acknowledge cravings and not give into them

  • Complete projects that have been moving from to-do list to to-do list for months or years (not kidding)

  • Refocus my energy on the things that truly matter to me (connection, balance, and intuition)

  • Loosen the hold of the Productivity Trap even more in my day-to-day life and make more time for walks, books, and decluttering (my happy place).

Having a powerful belief like this could be the difference between staying stuck in old, unhelpful habits and busting through those plateaus you've been stuck in to finally meet your goals and form new patterns.

It really can be that simple.

To breaking old cycles,

Steph
